What is it? Component B of Domain 4 focuses on the maintenance of accurate records. One of the bigger responsibilities that educators have is to keep accurate records of both instructional and non-instructional events. These types of records include student assignments, assessments, signed permission slips, etc.
Why do we need it? Proper execution of component 4B is vital for educators. Without having accurate records it is impossible to see student progress as well as reflect on teaching methods. This makes it impossible for effective teaching to take place. If the educator does not know where the students are at regarding the information then it becomes increasingly difficult to teach. Likewise, if a teacher does not have accurate records then it becomes difficult for them to successfully assess their own performance. This component is necessary to all educators because it allows for maximum growth in the classroom.
What are the elements? This component is made up of three elements. The first element centers on student completion of assignments. This means that teachers must keep track of whether or not students complete assignments and, in addition, track each student's success in the completion. The second element is all about student progress in learning. In essence, this element states that teachers must use both formative and summative assessments to track the progress of students and plan future lessons. It is key that this information be collected and updated frequently. The third and final element targets non-instructional records. This involves the management of envelopes containing doctor's notes, lunch money, etc.
What does implementation look like? Educators can implement component 4B by:
Keeping student portfolios or data folders.
Using a spreadsheet or database to record formal and informal assessment scores. For example, Google Spreadsheets or Microsoft Excel.
Using a grade book instead of an online resource to record scores on assignments.
Using checklists for non-instructional items .
I would suggest keeping both paper and electronic copies of grade tracking in order to avoid any unexpected mishaps.
Keep yourself up to date on new tech tools to use in the classroom such as Chalk.com, Moodle, etc.
